A woman attacked a shopping center after learning that security cameras were recording in a public bathroom that has baby hygiene facilities.

Amy Mitchell, 24, from West Lothian, urged other parents to “boycott” the toilets at Livingston Designer Outlet, which are next to a Vue cinema, adding: “There is no excuse for placing a camera in any toilet, especially one where there are children.”

The mother of one took Facebook to share a photo of a sign placed on the mirror, which warned that “the images are being monitored in order to maintain the security of the facilities, the prevention and investigation of crimes and for the sake of good asset management.”

“They think it is acceptable to put CCTV on the BABY CHANGING TABLE,” she wrote in the accompanying post.

‘I spoke to the assistant principal, who informed me that they don’t look into the bathrooms, only inside the door to monitor who comes and goes. If that’s the case, place a camera outside the bathroom?

‘By the way, the CCTV notice isn’t even on the outside of the door, this piece of paper just informs you once you’re there.

Amy, who has a three-year-old son, said Edinburgh live that she felt ‘disgusted’ and ‘violated’ by the situation.

“I took my little one to the changing rooms and it wasn’t until I left that I saw the CCTV notice and the camera,” he said.

“I contacted customer service at the design store and the lady put me in touch with the assistant manager.”

It is understood that management’s reason for using the cameras is to monitor and deter “anti-social behavior by teenagers who have been vandalizing the baby changing facilities and attacking staff at the establishment”.

Amy also said she suggested that a camera outside the bathrooms, or even a faucet, might work better, but was apparently told it was “a very ’20s thing.”

The mother also claimed that there is also a mirror on the back of the door, at which the camera is pointed, in which a reflection of the baby changing facilities can “most likely” be seen.

A mall spokesperson said Edinburgh live that they would be “reviewing their policy following complaints made by members of the public.”

“We are aware of the concerns raised regarding the location of the CCTV facilities within the centre,” they told the outlet.

“We are committed to ensuring a safe and enjoyable environment for all our visitors and staff and are reviewing any concerns raised regarding the use of CCTV.”

While some in the comments defended the choice, claiming there was a problem with people vandalizing facilities, most were “shocked” by the decision.

‘I was actually using this bathroom with my niece the other day and I didn’t notice the sign until I came out and I had no idea what to do, thinking they basically had a video of me and my two-year-old niece doing the bathroom.’ one shared.

“The world is a dangerous place,” added another. “I’m so afraid of our babies growing up in this world.”

“Some places have keys you have to ask for,” a third suggested. ‘That seems more appropriate than a camera inside the bathroom…’
