An Australian tourist cyclist in New York City died after colliding with a garbage truck when he deviated to prevent a vehicle from blocking the bike lane near Central Park.
Police said Madison Jane Lyden, 23, got into traffic on Friday afternoon, local time, when a stopped taxi suddenly stopped in front of her.
Lyden was pronounced dead in a hospital.
A transport defense group said it was "an accident waiting to happen" because "lazy, titled drivers" are parking, leaving people standing and idling on bike lanes.
Transportation alternatives said that the death of Lyden "underscores the need for every major street in New York City to have a safe and secure space to travel by bicycle."
