Sun Belt shines against Donald Trump in crucial southern states poll

Donald Trump has built a lead over Kamala Harris in Arizona and held on to a lead in Georgia, two states he lost to Joe Biden in 2020, while clinging to a lead in North Carolina, according to a new poll.

Sun Belt voters say Trump improved their lives when he was president and are concerned Harris won’t do so if he wins, according to the New York Times/Siena College vote.

The polls, conducted from Sept. 17-21, provide the latest indication that this will likely be one of the closest presidential races in history.

In perhaps the most troubling news for the vice president, Arizona, which President Biden won by just over 10,000 votes in 2020, shows Trump ahead 50 percent to 45 percent, according to the poll, compared with the same pollsters’ findings in August, which had Harris leading by five percentage points.

In North Carolina, which Trump won by fewer than 75,000 votes in 2020, he holds a slim lead over Harris, 49-47, according to the Times poll, which was conducted largely before reports that Mark Robinson, the Republican gubernatorial candidate there who once enjoyed Trump’s endorsement, had made disturbing posts on a pornography forum, including referring to himself as a “black Nazi.”

And in Georgia, where Biden won by just under 11,800 votes in 2020, Trump still holds a slim lead, 49 percent to 45 percent, according to the poll.

The margin of error in each state is between four and five percentage points.

Harris plans swing state tour

Kamala Harris will be campaigning in key states this week, visiting key areas of Pennsylvania, Arizona and Nevada.

The three states are crucial in his race against his Republican rival Donald Trump.

Harris will campaign in Pennsylvania on Wednesday, Arizona on Friday and Nevada on Sunday. On Thursday, she will be at the White House to meet with Ukrainian President Zelensky.

On Wednesday, during her visit to Pennsylvania, Harris will deliver a speech focused on the economy, which voters consider their main concern ahead of the November elections.

Last week the focus was on Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin and Georgia.

His campaign sees the Sunbelt and the so-called “Blue Wall” as the key to securing the 270 electoral votes needed to win the presidency.

His campaign’s infrastructure and organization in these battlefields far surpasses Trump’s, his team argues.

Trump will be in Pennsylvania on Monday, Georgia on Tuesday and Michigan on Friday.

Congress announces deal to avoid government shutdown

Congressional leaders announced an agreement Sunday on a short-term spending bill that will fund federal agencies for about three months.

The move would avert a possible partial government shutdown when the new budget year begins on Oct. 1 and delay final decisions until after the November election.

The stopgap spending bills typically fund agencies at current levels, but an additional $231 million was included to bolster the Secret Service after the two assassination attempts on Donald Trump.

Additional money was also added to help with the presidential transition, among other things.

Lawmakers have struggled to get to this point as the current budget year draws to a close at the end of the month.

At the urging of more conservative members of his conference, House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., had tied the temporary funding to a mandate that would have required states to require proof of citizenship when people register to vote.

But Johnson abandoned that approach to reaching a deal, even as Trump insisted there should be no stopgap measure without the vote requirement.

Bipartisan negotiations began in earnest shortly afterward, and leaders agreed to extend funding through mid-December.

Donald Trump makes dramatic announcement about his 2028 presidential bid

Donald Trump has revealed that he will probably not run for president in 2028 if he loses the election to Vice President Kamala Harris.

The 78-year-old former president told “Full Measure” with Sharyl Attkisson in an interview that aired Sunday that he doesn’t see himself running again if he doesn’t win the White House in November.

“If you’re not successful this time, do you see yourself running again in four years?” Attkisson asked Trump.

“No, I don’t think so. I think that’ll be it. I don’t see it at all. Hopefully, we’ll be successful,” Trump said.

The former president would be 82 years old at the time of the 2028 elections.

If he wins in 2024, he will not be able to run for office again, as US presidents can only serve two terms – eight years.

Trump ally pushes Nebraska to change voting law in measure that could swing election

A top ally of Donald Trump is pushing Nebraska Republicans to award all of their state’s Electoral College votes to the state’s winner, a last-minute rule change that could potentially help return Trump to the White House.

Nebraska and Maine are the only states that divide their electoral votes by congressional district, and both have done so in recent presidential elections.

In Nebraska, which is solidly Republican, that means one of the state’s five votes is competitive for Democrats.

The district in question is the congressional district that encompasses Omaha, which could go either way in November.

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., recently met with Republican lawmakers in the state to encourage them to make a change supported by the all-Republican congressional delegation and Republican Gov. Jim Pillen.

The change was discussed earlier this year, but there weren’t enough votes to pass it. Now, with Trump in an extremely tight race against Democrat Kamala Harris, where every electoral vote matters, his allies are making another push.

“For my friends in Nebraska, that electoral vote could be the difference between Harris being president or not, and she is a disaster for Nebraska and the world,” Graham said Sunday on NBC’s Meet the Press.

Top US election forecaster reveals possibility of Donald Trump victory

“One potential advantage of having a forecast that says… it’s 50/50, is that people should be making their contingency plans immediately,” he said.

“That doesn’t mean you need to stockpile ammunition and peanut butter” – that laugh again – “but it does mean, you know: What is your strategy for protecting American institutions in the event of a second Trump term?”
