Republicans today will look to build on their surprising electoral success by inching toward control of the House of Representatives as races across the United States hang in the balance.

The Republican Party needs 10 more seats to secure a majority in the lower house after already taking the Senate to give Donald Trump an early boost ahead of his next presidency.

However, with 19 results still to be determined, Democrats desperately hope to gain more seats to ensure that President-elect Trump does not have unlimited power when he takes office next year.

What Trump could do with a Republican victory

If Republicans take back the House, they would fully control the legislative, executive and judicial branches of the federal government during Trump’s first years in office, giving him broad control after his defeat just four years ago.

Republicans can also take stronger action against transgender issues involving schools and sports, which Trump and the GOP have often talked about during the campaign.

With control of the Senate, Republicans will be able to dictate approvals of federal judges and cabinet positions such as Secretary of State and Secretary of Defense.

If a vacancy arises on the Supreme Court, the Senate takes care of that too.

During Trump’s last presidency, the Senate was controlled by the Republican Party, and the former president was able to help appoint three of the court’s nine sitting justices, which has had a major impact on the body’s ideological leaning.

Republican supermajority could soon sweep Washington

Although Republicans have been named winners of the White House and Senate, some House races may take days, if not weeks, to call.

The GOP also gained control of the Senate after flipping several seats red, with some races still to be finalized and turnaround opportunities still on the table.

Republicans now need to maintain control of the House to have a full supermajority in Washington, DC, which would have major consequences for Democrats.
