A man accused of killing his ex-wife by running her off the road was found dead in his cell just days before the one-year anniversary of the crash.

Troy Armstrong, 36, had been charged with murdering his ex-wife Kristy when he allegedly drove towards her sedan at 140kmh in Molong, central western New South Wales, on June 9 last year.

Kristy died instantly while Armstrong suffered severe brain and spinal injuries in the accident that left him unable to walk or go to the bathroom.

The couple’s two daughters, ages eight and 13, were in the back of Kristy’s sedan and suffered minor injuries.

On Tuesday, Armstrong was found unconscious in his cell at the Metropolitan Detention and Reception Center in Silverwater, west of Sydney.

A NSW Correctional Services spokeswoman said: “The inmate was immediately given first aid and taken to hospital but was pronounced dead.”

“As a matter of protocol, NSW Correctional Services and NSW Police investigate all deaths in custody, regardless of the circumstances.”

His death comes just three days before the first anniversary of the accident.

Armstrong also faced two counts of attempted murder relating to his two daughters and three counts of failing to comply with detained violence orders.

He had not pleaded guilty at the time of his death.

Police allege Armstrong intentionally crashed his vehicle into Kristy’s sedan while traveling at 80 mph following an argument at their children’s elementary school.

Kristy had issued a stopped violence order against Armstrong just two weeks before his death.
