An American Airlines passenger died after falling ill on a flight to Charlotte, North Carolina, when the plane made an emergency landing in the idyllic Turks and Caicos Islands.

The flight from Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, had to be diverted yesterday afternoon after an unforeseen medical emergency.

The 41-year-old passenger suddenly fell ill and, despite the flight crew’s quick response and efforts to revive her through CPR, an immediate emergency landing was necessary to provide further medical treatment. National Caribbean Weekly reports.

The plane diverted to Providenciales International Airport around 6:18 p.m., according to reports.

The passenger was taken to Cheshire Hall Medical Center, but despite all attempts to save her, she was pronounced dead.

In December, a small plane made an emergency landing on a North Carolina highway and burst into flames.

The single-engine Diamond DA-40 aircraft crashed onto Interstate 26 in Ashville around 8:15 p.m.

The two passengers on board were taken to a local hospital, the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office reported.

An airport spokesman said the plane reported problems and called for help just before going down.
